friday fuzzy

June 29, 2012

heart breaking.

heart broke.

frenchies for the win!
never mind that somebody had to explain ftw to me a month ago. i'm still confident enough to use it.
you'll tell me if i'm not doing it right, right?

hope your friday is a bit more pleasant temperature-wise than mine.
it's steamy out. if i was a clam, i'd be hanging out of my shell by now.

civilian teeth

June 28, 2012

you know how i like creepy things. found things. curiosities and oddities.
well, perhaps i've gone over the edge with these buffalo teeth. but they're massive. and fabulous.
and i'm thinking there are a whole lot of buffalo out there who may need dentists in a bad way.
so, yes... the teeth are in the shop.
just in case you have always wanted but never been able to find a good set of buffalo teeth,
i've got you covered.

and then i was listening to music, the way it's always on in the house.
and these lyrics suddenly jumped out at me.

i still keep my baby teeth
in the bedside table with my jewelry

i've listened to this song at least twenty times now.
never noticed that bit. it hits close to home.
my baby teeth are in a bedside table with some jewelry.

so now, you want to hear this song right? it's beautiful.
and it's about teeth. it's a theme for today.

and oh yes! shop update! lots of great finds and some really unusual pieces added today.
i promise they aren't all teeth. right over here.

the public domain archives are truly fascinating.
redeeming itself for the never ending disgrace of the now ubiquitous "keep calm and carry on"
they've released full scans of shin-bijutsukai

pages and pages of a 1902 japanese design magazine.
it's paper i can only dream about.

luckily, you can view the whole collection here.
i have, of course, been fawning over this modern day alternative at uguisu.

also dug out of the archives? this little gem...

context is everything, isn't it?

yours affectionately,

monday. tuesday.

June 26, 2012

on monday morning we had a ring of cement with some dirt in it.

by the end of monday, we had this...

by the end of tuesday we had this...

if they keep this up, i'll be moving in tomorrow.

excited just isn't a big enough word.
there might be some high kicks going on over here.
just saying.

June 25, 2012

i forgot to share the finished photos of my heron.
for awhile now, i've been wanting to make a more delicate bird, an awkward shore bird.
and i've had this line in my head for weeks, "you be the heron and i'll be the fox" courtesy of little scream.

her neck twists just right... it mimics the moment they hear something and pause for assessment.
unfortunately, i free handed the pattern and forgot to take notes! it was a bit of a head scratcher when i tried to recreate the pieces. lesson learned. hopefully.

she's in the shop, but i really won't mind if she stays here on my desk for awhile.

loving nightwood's reincarnated designs. absolutely loving.

growing up in a house with fancy furniture and endless rules about not touching anything
made me long to jump on the bed, stand on the arms of the couch or make a fort from the cushions.
now that i get to choose the furniture (and the rules), we have a lot of vintage.
designs i love with dents and dings and years of wear.

vintage has an added bonus...
if it's dinged, another ding won't show.
and if the thonet chair is already scuffed a bit, i won't be afraid to sit in it.
and well, if it's lasted this long, there's not much worse i could do to it.
it's made a comfortable house for us.

which is why these (re)designs from nightwood are calling my name.
i love the graceful, delicate lines combined with the patched and layered fabrics and cushions.
it's intriguing. it makes me want to take a needle and thread to the furniture and see what happens.

fear and furniture really shouldn't mix.
furnishings should invite. and comfort. and give you a place to collapse.
and when the cushion wears out (which it will, you're using it everyday, aren't you?)
toss a new one on. it's so simple.

June 19, 2012

consider this fair warning that thursday will be elephant heavy in the shop.

first, a beautiful elephant puppet toy. his neck is a strip of linen and he has a real hair tail! perfectly detailed, even his ears are articulated. fabulous.

and on the other end of the elephant spectrum. a sock elephant. have you ever seen a sock elephant?
it's creepy, isn't it? fascinating and unusual and i hope it finds just the right home.

and finally, i came across this paper elephant puppet on flickr. (there's other animals to print out and make too.) and so, you get a pachyderm post. should we have a carnival? a parade?

oh, and if you aren't into elephants...
thursday's shop update will have a couple monkeys too!

ear you go

June 18, 2012

this lovey dovey kind of music isn't usually my cup of tea,
but i can't help but smiling every time i sing along to it.
i thought you could use a smile too.
( you are also smiling because you can't hear me sing it. lucky you. )

five things // one thing at a time

( a mantra for tackling this week's to do list )

June 16, 2012

i find myself feeling dulled these days.
blunted. fractured. grey.
it's been too hot to work in my studio and i find myself pacing around the house unable to think.
i feel empty. hollow. and yet, i feel a bit like i'm full to the point of bursting.
perhaps a change in the weather will help.
perhaps a new nature system.

sometimes the internet feels like high school.
everything you put out there will be measured up, scrutinized, found wanting.
i find it stifling.
but it's the not internet, not really.
it's something internal. some part of adolescence i've never really been able to shake.

you spend too much time rattling around in your own head
you're bound to knock something loose.
something that's been holding on for a very long time.

every story should have a beginning, middle and end.
this one is mostly middle.

friday fuzzy

June 15, 2012

you do realize, that friday fuzzy is quickly in danger of becoming friday frenchie?
particularly after i discovered the daily frenchie.

pages and pages and pages of the little turds.
and i still don't think there are enough french bulldogs in the world.

happy friday!
hope you have a wild & wonderful weekend.

life in the hedge

June 14, 2012

rabbit and hedgehog.
a funny little pair, aren't they?

little hedgeroo was a custom order to keep the rabbit company.
i suspect they'll get along swimmingly.

xo. r

ps. did you know hedgehogs have tails? really wee tails.
pps. oh, albatross shop was restocked today. lots of fun finds and a few oeuflings too.

a beautiful and intriguing piece by dorie millerson.
love that it feels frail and strong at the same time.
love the shadows and lines extending out, out, out.

make something today.

letters & words

June 12, 2012

Dear Sir:

I like words. I like fat buttery words, such as ooze, turpitude, glutinous, toady. I like solemn, angular, creaky words, such as straitlaced, cantankerous, pecunious, valedictory. I like spurious, black-is-white words, such as mortician, liquidate, tonsorial, demi-monde. I like suave "V" words, such as Svengali, svelte, bravura, verve. I like crunchy, brittle, crackly words, such as splinter, grapple, jostle, crusty. I like sullen, crabbed, scowling words, such as skulk, glower, scabby, churl. I like Oh-Heavens, my-gracious, land's-sake words, such as tricksy, tucker, genteel, horrid. I like elegant, flowery words, such as estivate, peregrinate, elysium, halcyon. I like wormy, squirmy, mealy words, such as crawl, blubber, squeal, drip. I like sniggly, chuckling words, such as cowlick, gurgle, bubble and burp.

I like the word screenwriter better than copywriter, so I decided to quit my job in a New York advertising agency and try my luck in Hollywood, but before taking the plunge I went to Europe for a year of study, contemplation and horsing around.

I have just returned and I still like words.

May I have a few with you?

Robert Pirosh

how a copywriter gets a job.
possibly also, how i fall madly in love.

just look at all those delicious words.
say them out loud. roll them around your mouth.
taste them. savor them. tuck them carefully under your pillow.
be good to them. do.

robert pirosh's letter via letters of note.
an incredible repository for correspondence.
explore it. it will delight you.
read this one.
and this one too.

five things // life in slow motion

short stories

June 11, 2012

i'm very pleased to share this little article i wrote for the etsy blog about bethel, one of the pocket polar bears. read the whole article here.

it feels like a nice feather in my cap today. bethel's quite chuffed too.

we spent some time at the property this weekend, double checking the concrete work
and doing some general work around the place. it feels so incredible to finally see things starting to take shape. it's somewhat crazy to me that the stem walls are almost as tall as i am.

we took otis & guinness and loved watching the two of them explore life with no fences. it's the same thing patrick and i are looking forward to... freedom to walk and wander and not be confined by our small backyard with its borders of chain link.

out here the only sound you hear is the wind rustling through the leaves. it's perfect. now we just need some walls and a roof...

friday fuzzy

June 8, 2012

if i had a cabin on a lake, maybe in the woods,
there would be a fox sitting on a well-worn couch
waiting for the popcorn to be popped
and perhaps for a small blanket he could call his own.

`I only said "if"!' poor Alice pleaded in a piteous tone. The two Queens looked at each other, and the Red Queen remarked, with a little shudder, `She SAYS she only said "if" - ' `But she said a great deal more than that!' the White Queen moaned, wringing her hands. `Oh, ever so much more than that!' `So you did, you know,' the Red Queen said to Alice.

happy friday, is it really here already?

June 7, 2012

i don't usually do themed shop updates,
but as i was photographing a few antique toys, all the rest wanted to come out and play.
the end result? today's shop update is definitely for the young at heart.

the stuffed dogs just kill me. wired legs, glass eyes, straw stuffing. so freaking charming.
and the globe is a rather hard to find 1950's metal bodied globe. i have the same one in my personal collection... it's the one that kicked the whole obsession off.

and if you're not feeling playful today, there are a few more serious finds tucked in today's update too.
look for it in the early afternoon!
